The Tsarevich and the Wolf was where Tree Folk Theatre really begun. Based on old Russian folklore after having been to a storytelling evening where they retold some Russian fairytales using the power of their words, movements of their bodies and Russian folk songs. We wanted to recreate this but by using more of a visual approach. After reading a few of the Russian folk tales, we decided upon that of Tsarevich Ivan and the firebird. We used hand made masks and puppets that we created ourselves and studied Russian folk music to create a semi-authentic Russian feel while also bringing our own style to the piece. The movement of the wolf was created using a huge wolf mask, and 3 actors with wooden sticks which were used to create the limbs. Through use of storytelling and physical theatre we created a memorable piece of theatre that was compared to that of a medieval travelling circus.
